I was watching the old British Wrestling (World of Sport) the other day and the term Physical Culturist came up in regard to a few wrestlers, and I figured that was a term that was used in the 1950s and prior to that time but it appears it was still being used in the 1970s (??)...does anyone know when it phased out or went out of fashion and if there was a reason for the change? Like I said, just curious, but interesting nonetheless. And, for your amusement:

Good question.
I'll have to check Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors.

This is just a guess...
The term physical culturist would include strength training, conditioning, bodybuilding, gymnatics, healthy eating, stretching, and positive thinking. The guys back then wanted to be well-rounded in every aspect of the physical and mental well-being. I'm betting when bodybuilding and muscle mass became more important (Thank you Weider - lol) that the term lost favor. But that's just a guess. |
