Tom did mention to me is that one of the ways he conditioned himself to a higher volume was to start small and build up.

So my interpretation was something like...

If your squat is 500 and you want to squat 5 times per week, don't start with 400+ squat sessions 5 times per week. Start, say, with 270-300 pounds and slowly build up the weight, allowing your CNS to adapt.
