I worked in supply during my time in the Army. Out until would be allotted about $300 a quarter for supplies. The 1st Sgt and Commander would ask for their per items, like carbon paper, special pens, whatever, and that would leave the unit of 250+ soldiers left with $150 for the quarter. Then we would have to find a way to make 3 $50 boxes of toilet paper last for 3 months for 250 people.

Yes, $50 for a box of toilet paper.

This madness is one of the reasons I got out of the Army. People were forced to steal from each other to make do. And if your unit came up missing any items, unit supply had to pay for them out of their own pockets.

The government was an absolute mess back then in the early 90's. I wouldn't want to see it now from the inside.

I work at an AFB now, and the waste I see makes me sick. I live in Massachusetts, so in January it's Winter. Cold, snowy, not really the type of weather that makes you think leaf blowers and lawn mowing...but the base seems to find a way to tell the "grounds crew" to go clean up. I understand an AFB should look good, but seriously? In January? Not to mention, they had "extra" money to spend from Obama's American Recovery Act..so they paid a contractor to rip up and repave half the parking lots..when they were just paved 4 years ago, and then resealed last year...

Some people might be shocked my stories like that, but I'm not.

And as far as raking, etc., it never ended for us in the Army either. They always found a way to waste tax dollars.
