Heavy squatting, and deadlifting will work them to an extent, but doing direct work will help with your ankle stability and strength.

I like to think of my lower leg along the same lines as my forearms. Grip work for your forearms is something a lot of people fail to see the light about.

Good forearm, and lower leg development will help with a lot of other lifts.

Pin squats are OK, but they tend to put you in an unnatural starting position. If you can do them suspended from chains that would be better. Also, if getting used to more weight on your back is the goal, have you ever thought about chains or bands?

i've though about them.... micro minis, but that wont help with squats.... i may by some chains or something.....

maybe i could just add high box squats?????
