I bought a guy a pull-up bar; he used it.
Bought a female an exercise ball; she never used it, to my knowledge.

But those kinds of things aren't overly expensive and can be used immediately as opposed to books, unless the person already works out in which case books, vids, specialised styles, wraps, belts, chalk, would be perfect.

A water bottle, gym towel with initials or a cool saying on it, chalk, aspirin, muscle rub, possible a small care package for when you need relief (aspirin or ibuprofen, etc.).
