On that, I agree absolutely. That's why I think that trying to put the emphasis on 'spotting the potential nutjobs' is a largely wasted effort.

As an Englishman (in New Yooooooorrrkkk, woah I'm an alien...) I like Tann has described have struggled to understand the American obsession with firearms in the face of such tragedies. Having read some of your posts, about the family traditions especially, I now have a more solid grasp of where you are coming from. Thanks.

I don't know how I would personally stand on guns, if I lived in the USA but I don't so it's a moot point for me in that sense. I know we have issues in our inner city areas with crime, probably not to the point of America but it's still crime, horrendous ones at times, acid in people's faces, pregnant women threatened with kicks to the stomach and such.

I recall the bus monitor, USA, last year (was it) the way she was treated was despicable; my point, society has altered a lot and many of the issues and crimes are a result of that, not all but many of them. We have less extended families and more nuclear family set-ups, where people just don't talk or interact any more; that can't be healthy for society in general. We even see adverts which portray several family members in the same room all doing their own thing, no talking, all in their own little worlds.

I really think some of the changes in society are behind some crimes. Just my thoughts.

Here is the NRA press conference. Thought I would post it and see what you all think of their points.

I agree that all of this is over reaction .... It is a harsh world and bad things happen to good people. Punish the bad and do what is resonable to protect the good.

Unfortunately "resonable" is an ever changing definition these days.

We have laws that dictate gun ownership and possession already.

We also have laws against assualt and murder... those laws were / are ignored by the bad guys - what makes anyone think that they will pay any attention to any new laws? The only ones who get hurt are the law abiding citizens.... as usual.

ok, here is the my out look....

first off as many of you already know, i am a retired Army soldier, i have had a gun in my hands for the last 30 plus years. i have a CCDW license and dont go anywhere without my side arm. for me it is almost a part of me. i do not own any assault style weapons, but i like most other gun owners am afraid to allow the government to implace stricter guns laws. mainly because "we" fear the give an inch take a mile mentality of the current goverment.
I would support gun control that addressed stricter punishment for crimes committed with guns, cracked down on the illegal blackmarketing of guns, and some sort of mandatory education for the youth of today.

i actually just wrote an essay for my english class on this very topic.

i could go on but i wont...

with all the buzz about gun bans, im seriously considering going out and picking up an AR before they get out lawed...

And so it begins. . .
The left calling for tighter restriction and control of our freedoms
The right fearing a total ban on guns will push for more freedoms and less control
Nothing much will change and the root causes of such tragedies will go unresolved

The guns laws in Illinois are pretty strict. In some cases the fact of having the weapon carried more time then the actual crime itself. For instance, I recently took an inmate to court and his crime had a weapons enhancement charge for the murder he committed. The weapon enhancement carried more years then the actual murder did. Go figure.

Why we as a nation allow someone who has taken a life a second chance is beyond me.

We dont need more laws and regulations we need to enforce the ones we have.

Lets not forget that our "own government" likes to traffic weapons illegally (Fast and Furious).
