Blue areas are usually more densely populated. Cities and suburbs and sometimes major interstates, like I-95 along the east coast.

It's not about how much square footage, it's about how many people.

No, not about square footage. For me it's about self-reliance version government reliance.

Us rural folks value tend to value self-reliance more. Just stating the obvious - we have 2 different world views. It is what it is.

The only real point is that large clusters of people tend to rely on structures and systems more to get by.

I don't think it's fair or accurate to say that somehow people living near cities aren't into being self-reliant.

This whole "welfare state" argument doesn't hold up when examined.

There is a new Bloomberg report that shows that the greatest increases in welfare have been in red areas, not blue areas.

Republican-Heavy Counties Eat Up Most Food-Stamp Growth - Bloomberg

So, the very same people who preach the "self-reliance argument" end up needing government aid.

I think it's an accurate generalization.

We simply rely more on each other and less on government. That's the reality. The map reveals the tendencies, so I'm not sure why you find it hard to swallow.

Us rural folks want small government and more self-reliance. Big city voters are tending socialistic. That says it all as far as I am concerned.

Out here we don't want the government to solve our problems. Please don't see that as an attack on your ideology, it's just what we believe. We stand for self-reliance, not socialism.

My point, which is being missed, is that the more intertwined people are, the more they tend to rely on that fabric that knits them together. I am not saying this is inherently a bad thing. I hope we can keep the discussion here civil. I was merely analyzing the differences between the hive and the lone bee. I think to pretend differences don't exist between these two types of structures is missing the mark. The lone bee is more self reliant. The hive relies more on a system.

To paraphrase a wise man - " any man who would trade liberty for security, deserves neither" Every person is entitiled to their own beliefs - live and let live.... but as for me and mine ( more of those rural folks) we prefer to be self reliant and self sufficent. I am all for helping ohters.... but I also believe in helping one's self.
