Arnold to star as Conan the Barbarian again - MSN Movies News

Arnold Schwarzenegger will once again play Conan the Barbarian on the big screen. Yes, you heard that correctly.

Thirty years after he made an impact as Robert E. Howard's mythic Cimmerian character, the 65-year-old star will return to his seminal film role in "The Legend of Conan."

"I always loved the Conan character and I'm honored to be asked to step into the role once again," Arnold tells Deadline. "I can't wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story."

Malmberg provides insight into the new movie, saying, "The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make. It's that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he'll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle."

Meanwhile, Morgan calls the new movie "Conan's Unforgiven," saying, "This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn't touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film."



Arnold starred in a total of two Conan movies -- 1982's "Conan the Barbarian" and in 1984's "Conan the Destroyer" -- and the character was picked up for a third big-screen outing in 2011 with Jason Momoa as the title character -- with less-than-stellar box-office results.

"I think I was kind of meant for playing Conan, you know?" Arnold told ET back in the early '80s. "I think that I felt very comfortable playing that character, playing that barbaric role, doing all the sword fighting, and it was a very physical film. This is the great thing about doing films. First of all, you learn new things -- sword-fighting or horseback riding and all those things -- and at the same time you play like a little child, you can play like cowboy and Indian type of things, you know, looking for the enemy and crushing them and knocking them down."

I don't know how he would be able to portray the physical aspect of Conan. I understand that the character has aged the same way Arnold has. But, for me, the first two movies were all about the physical presence of Arnold/Conan (I'll never forget the scene where he was dominating the gladiator pit and spreads his arms out - those tri's hanging and the lats just out there). I think it would be cool for him to have a son (maybe another jacked bodybuilder) to be that physical presence.

So true...wonder if he'll be as rickety as Rutger Hauer as the head vamp in the remake of Salem's Lot...that was comical, I was in stitches
