The anonymity of the internet makes people all sorts of brave. I've rarely met many keyboard warriors who would say the stuff they type to someone's face. It's rather easy to be an asshole behind an avatar or email address.

I wouldn't ignore them, just because, having kids, I know the extent that these kinds of things happen to people daily. I wouldn't advocate responding to everyone who said something negative to you, but I do think (like fighting back to an in-person bully), there is a statement than can be made my selectively addressing this kind of unacceptable behavior.

I think the anchor was right for calling out the emailer and, anyone dismissing her as a donut-eating fat-ass is completely missing the point. Just because someone is struggling with something doesn't give anyone else the right to make them feel like crap because of it.

Who is the emailer to determine that only fitness models can be role models? As if your outter appearance trumps any other good that you do.

Screw a lot of that line of thinking.

Bullying is a big issue to the girls in my daughter's junior high school. We've found there are some you ignore, generally the attention hoppers, who are after only attention and move on to the next prey in a few days, and ones you need to smack down.

The big bullies we call the school and parents immediately. On several occasions I have met the parents face to face and told them I will not allow my daughter to be treated as such.

The Internet is kind of the same way. Many of the bullies are simply 16 year old insecure porn and video game addicts who aren't worthy of a response. On the other hand, some of them are grownups looking to push around people of differing opinions, etc. These are the folks that bother me the most.

We've had a few on Facebook who attack every post, article, transformation, etc. They have a viewpoint on some issue and won't rest until every human being hears their message.

Big difference between believing in your message and bullying your message.

As I have pointed out this was a grown woman, not someones children who are more or less defenseless.

I think that, a " bully" that is in your face or is causing you real damage is fair game.

I would submit for consideration that children will benefit more from a an adult showing thick skin, than one who needs to complain about something that they didn't even know had happened.

Seems this would apply to every post in this thread.

Opinions are like................. well you know. I am secure knowing that I am a big stinky one! Problem seems to me that other don't think that they are.

Well I do tell my children frequently to ignore wayward criticism. I remind them often that they have a right to their own life, and to be happy, and never to change how they live to please someone that means nothing to them.

In this sense we do equip them to express their thick-skinnedness.

Everyone has an opinion about our lives. Few of these matter.

IMO, age is irrelevant, because it doesn't make a person any less prone to the effects of bullying or whatever label people would like to give it.

On a side note, that sort of comment, the emailers, I mean, can also lead the recipient into the unhealthy realms of anorexia...people can be informed they are overweight, have it brought to their attention or at least discuss what they already know themsleves etc (as she herself pointed out) but done in the wrong way, it can be disastrous...I've seen it in a local hairdresser who can't even jog because their heart is so weak it would kill them...and all because it was approached wrongly.

Words, written or otherwise, can be damaging; and I for one, don't believe her (the news woman) when she stated that it didn't bother her since her bodylanguage does not match her words.

This misses a point. Adults have feelings too. And many are as insecure as adults as they were when they were teens. I mean, look at all the guys acting like the "biggest, strongest, most manly, macho men ever" on any given lifting site (including this one).

We all know that isn't a true face. Its a shield. To hide insecurities and inadequacies.
