To be honest, if that happened to me, my response would probably get me kicked out and banned! Yes the kid was making a bit of noise but it could have been quite close to his max. I know I make quite a bit of noise doing deadlifts for reps. It's not like he was screaming or grunting during a set of cheat curls.
And that woman leaning over during the middle of his set.....

There are, IMO of course, too many gyms that clearly don't want people to get stronger because they promote crappy exercises and show short shrift towards those who try and push their limits. If you want quiet, stay home and read a bloody book or hit a library.

There's an eccentric phase to a deadlift? I just try and put it down as fast as possible, whatever weight, whilst keeping my hands on the bar. Makes noise, so I can entirely empathise with this kid, but I'm not going to waste energy putting it down like a fairy.

Although he should've been kicked out for wearing gloves while pulling.

If you really feel that way why not just drop the thing and not even worry about putting it down at all?

I am not a powerlifter nor am I a bodybuilder. I just want to be big and strong.

Because we have to keep our hands on it during meets on the way down. It needs to be lowered "under control" but noise isn't a big deal.

That's a good reason.

Talking of DL eccentrics, some time ago I saw a vid in which the barbell was lifted up for the lifter and then the spotters let go and he did a very very slow eccentric phase back to the floor...for several reps, with the same pattern of two guys lifting the barbell to him in the standing/final position and him slowly lowering it under extreme control back to the floor.

So, maybe slow eccentrics are not so useless/pointless after all...and they were no lightweight; but, I'm not going to waste time searching out the vid, it may even be somewhere on the forum already anyway.
