Granted the intensity and weight are ramped up, but from a simple math standpoint it doesn't add up. Anyone know more about his training approach? Am I missing anything?

I don't think you're missing anything, sounds like it wasn't well thought out when it was written, clearly not a routine he actually follows himself.
