I am finding the the older my training age gets, the more efficient I am with recovery, even with heavy (not maximal) loads.

In my opinion, I don't think that it has that much to do with recovery rather than conditioning. The muscle are conditioned and can take the abuse you put upon them alot better than a man with less conditioned muscles.
