Keep the back upright can mean different things to different people. 9 times out of 10 inexperienced deadlifters end up still-legging their deadlifts and this can be corrected because common form setup mistakes are being made.
Do you mean you were deadlifting like a SLDL, or are you literally trying to deadlift with an upright back? If so, this isn't a maximal leverage position, and is not correct deadlift form. It will generally force you into a position where your hips are too low while pulling, and this can be hard to achieve unless your feet are too far away from the bar to start with. This will cause further issues when you begin to pull.
