Wow, is that an American cultural thing? I've never heard of it occurring in the UK; I know they have book clubs (for years now) and they take a small pamphlet of reading books around to see if friends, other kids, want one etc but nothing along the lines
of sell to get a prize or even commercial based style of promotion and such.
