In regards to the original question, ketosis isn't necessary or the goal in itself. It's just a by product of what happens with that kind of diet.

I ran 20-30g of net carbs a day for 12 months with cheats every 90 days. Dropped a huge amount of weight and you're right, it gets easier once you're in the groove. In the past 6 months, I've let myself get out of the groove and its a royal pain getting back into it and conquering carb addiction all over again
