Incidentally, the abbreviation math is starting to gain ground in the UK over the more traditional maths. A bit of transatlantic migration, like 'back in the day', which was completely unknown over here until a few years ago.

I thought I was prepared for astrophysics having a strong algebra and calculus background, but the heavy emphasis on advanced geometry really kicked me in the teeth. I could solve an equation, but setting up advanced equations from scratch was a talent that was beyond me at the time. I never had an adviser warm me that I might want to master advanced geometry first. So it goes...

Regarding maths, we were pretty much weened from an early age to use math. Whenever I heard someone use maths I thought they were just being playfully odd.
