If it needs more than 1 (aside from warehouse transfer) step from the farm to the table, I'm a little suspicious.
Meat:
Alive -> slaughter/butcher -> me = good
Alive -> slaughter/butcher -> add chemicals -> package -> supermarket not so good
Veggies:
Field -> Washing/Packaging -> me = good
Field -> processing -> additives -? packaging -> me isn't as great. I do still buy some canned stuff, but prefer canning my own so i know whats in it. Preserve with vinegar, not sodium bisulfate.
