I think before you worry about the whole diet thing, what are your workouts? how much physical activity are you doing?
do you go in and just do a bodybuilding type workout, and body splits? if that's the case, you need to change that up quite a bit.
I don't think you should try any diet whatsoever right now. What you need to do is change behaviors and ask yourself these questions.
Do you drink soda?
Do you eat fast foods?
Do you only eat two or three large meals during the day?
Do you drink 10 glasses of water a day?
and i'm just getting started brother. 5'9" and 290lb means that you need to change lifestyle behaviors before you start worrying about low fat or carb diets.
