Personally, in addition to lifting, I get in a few long walks each week and follow a high saturated fat, low carb diet. This plan has reduced my cholesterol from the 500s down into the 150-160 range and dropped my triglycerides down from 1500s into the 180s, lowered my blood pressure from 180/100 to 110/65 ish and gotten my blood sugar back into the normal range (though I would like it to be a little lower, usually in the mid 80s)
