Yes, they are much better. Front squats also have a reputation for massive core development and increased athletic function.

The exercise performed first will usually almost always reap more benefits from a progressive resistance standpoint. Performing leg presses before squats would be like doing flies before bench presses. You would just simply pre-exhaust the quads before squatting.
I know that squats are
not quad dominant, but they are still important in the function of a deep squat. There's no really no reason leg presses would be done before squats from a functional standpoint.
