I have run it 2 ways:
Method 1
Only a few strawberries and a piece of string cheese during the underfeeding. I lost 48 pounds in 2 months, but 7 of it was muscle. I measured bodyfat composition using a caliper.
Method 2
Whey in water during the underfeeding, with BCAAs every couple of hours. About 400-500 calories of whey during the underfeeding. I lost zero muscle this way.
I have run the above for at least the last 2 years. I am a big night eater and it has served me very well.
