thats sounds like the bilateral deficit - the idea that you can use more nervs to send more signals to the muscles to work if you are only using one side at a time and therefore lift more, although some people dont think it is as significant as others and that it is more about stabilisation...
there is some good stuff on unilateral training, crossover to bilateral movements and the bilateral deficit here..
