Thanks Mike. Makes sense, but seems like a more advanced lifter type thing. I'll hold off on those SSB squats for quite a while yet. I have enough trouble staying upright with the straight bar!

Yeah, it's funny how deadlifts beat the snot out you, but it's sort of a stealth beating. For me, I feel it way later. Squats beat the snot out of me and I start feeling it right as I'm doing them. The last few reps hurt all the way through. It keeps hurting some all the way into the next morning, but after I get moving the next day, I feel pretty good, mybe just a little quad soreness depending on how hard the squats were.

But Deadlifts, I feel great all the way through the lifting session. Even if I miss a max, I usually still feel good and often want to go after that rep again. However, the next day I'm wiped out and it lasts for a couple days often. That's why I always deadlift on Fridays, I get two days rest afterward.

I started competing this year. March 31st 2012 was my first meet. So far only done USAPL. Next year will try some 100% Raw Federation meets. Honestly, having a meet out there on the horizon makes me work harder. If I wasn't competing, I doubt I'd work very hard very consistently.

Thanks for the info. Interesting.

Good stuff. I started in the USAPL and it still my favorite federation. You get a good total in that fed and it will usually stand anywhere. The SSB is not advanced at all though Mike. If you can get one (check ebay I literally stole mine) then its worth the purchase. I do agree you should pull. I should too if I want to pull 700 but its not my favorite lift and I dont plan on competing anytime soon.

Great work Mike! Congrats on the huge PR!!! Why no plans to compete? If its some personal reason you don't want to share, no biggie

Thanks man. Today was a fun day.
Just not in the mood at the moment. My last meet I was basically falling asleep when it came time to pull and it was a short one (over at 2:00). I pulled enough to set a total PR on my second and passed on the third. I have been competing off and on since I was 12 so meets really arent that big of a deal. Just having a good time training but it may change.

Wow since you were 11! Makes sense if your bored at the meets! Sounds like a been there done that sort of thing. But your still working hard, pushing yourself and setting PRs! Just from my perspective, I wonder what mountain you'd move if you really wanted it again! Hope that doesn't get taken the wrong way, I think you know what I mean

Dont get me wrong. I am obsessed with getting stronger. I just love the whole process of lifting. Being able to do something you couldnt before hooked me at a young age and drives me to this day. I do believe in competing (everybody should) but that is not what drives me. With the 5000 federations with different rules and regulations, diffrent classifications, etc, there has to be alot more to this than just competing or any smart and sane man would give it up.

I agree with that. I like the constant struggle to beat myself too. I think we all do. My thinking is that if I didn't have a meet looming, I would coast on some days, make excuses, whatever. With a meet looming, I believe I am more consistent in my effort.

Interesting insight though.

I got to watch what I write! I am not saying dont compete and I would be much stronger if I competed on a regular basis (for the reasons you gave Mike). I am just at a point where I dont feel like putting up with alot of the BS that goes with it. I also understand that I am sacrificng some strength gains because of it. I may compete next month if I feel like it, its just not on my radar now.

That makes a lot of sense Mike! I push myself each workout to do better, even if it's just a little. I don't have the same mindset as I haven't ever competed and I don't have any plans to. I don't think it's holding me back but maybe it is? At this point I'm nowhere near close to being able to compete in strength standards, and I'm on test shots for low t, so that makes everything different when it comes to what I could even enter even if I was stronger.
Thanks for answering my questions, I love the knowledge, I suck it up like a sponge!!!

No, you don't. I knew what you meant and took it the right way. I'm sure you realize I was not saying you are coasting either. I doubt very seriously that you are sacrificing much or that it's possible for you to work much harder than you already do. I think you are already internally motivated to do your best everyday. That's powerful. I need to find another internal gear there. That was my point really. I need that external right now to even do as good as I'm doing.

I think it is interesting to see the road you have traveled and are traveling.

I also see what you mean about the BS with meets, too. That is unfortunate and unecessary if you ask me.

Anyway, no need to worry about what you say or how you say it. Just blast away. No worries.
