Default Well, just F*** me...

It's official. I'm putting all training on hold. I have a moderately severe stress fracture in my lower left leg. Possibly in both bones. That coupled with my shoulder arthritis, just doesn't leave me any training option. I can't do strength or cardio without feeling pain, knowing I am only making it worse. I'm going to try to get into my Ortho Doctors office next week to confirm, but I've spoken with marathon runners and other people who know these injuries. I even had one work my foot around to see where it hurt. Within a few seconds, he said it was 99% a stress fracture, and based on how I walk, a pretty bad one at that.

This is the last straw for me. I will find a way through pain killers to complete the Tough Mudder if need be, but there won't much else for me this year. I can't even begin to explain the level of frustration. I am literally tetering on going back to being a fat, heavy, drinking smoker. I may have been out of shape, but at least I was happy. It's been 4 years of constant pain from training and over-training. I can't do it any longer. I don't know what my fitness-future holds, but certainly not a whole hell of a lot.

What about just doing upper body focused work for a while?

I only have one arm.. left shoulder has arthritis and bone spurs. I can't even bench an empty bar, or pull a 20# up from the left side.

I was able to get an appt with my Doc Monday afternoon...hopefully, he'll be able to do something. I'm drinking myself to sleep tonight, so I can finally get some rest.

But waking up by 10am tomorrow will suck... need to buy tix for Iron Maiden Summer Tour.. Setlist previews look insane, major kick ass.

Well....no Maiden tix, at least not in my price range. I overslept... I'm sure they will release more tickets, especially if as the event draws close. They always do..

As for the injury, I'll say this.. For something that is supposed to help, a cortisone shot hurts like hell! The Doc did say it would hurt, but he didn't say shit about the feeling like my shoulder socket was going explode.. I almost passed out, got all sweaty and light headed for a second. I'm not a fan of needles, but this was like a ****ing crude oil drill bit. Not to mention, he has to stick it in, then fish around for the right spot, stick again deeper, then inject. I suppose the ethyl chloride spray did take away some of the pain, along with some novacaine he stuck me with first...but it's feeling like a weight in pressing down on my left shoulder right now.

All expected the Doc said... A day, maybe two max and I should start to feel relief, although it takes about 3-4 weeks for 100% working time...hopefully it works, or Tough Mudder will just be that much tougher..

As for the leg, it seems to be getting better on it's own. Still sore at times, but I think this week off will be a good thing. Then it's back to the gym, but only on the bike for 2 weeks to keep burning cals, and keep any heavy or striking pressure off the legs. I'm just hoping I don't gain too much back, trying not to be stupid with the down-time.

So from the looks of it, I'll have just over 5 solid weeks to go balls out for training...I know I'll be ready, but every little bit more is a bonus...

Default A light at the end of the tunnel....

The tunnel to recovery that is!

The effects of the coritsone injection are wearing off, and it feels like the cortisone is working. I have a much greater ROM with my left arm than I have in months. Still a little tweak if I push to the limits of motion, but I can move it without feeling like a pussy.

Diet has been off a little bit, but I'll work it to make up for the extra cals. Leg is also feeling a bit better. But I think taking the full week off is a good idea to allow for needed rest. Next week will be hell for the gym, I shall destroy all obstacles on my way to Tough Mudder.

That's good news Ricka. I was worried this might end up in the shitter for you.

Little update...

Feeling better, recovery is coming along. Only slight pain in shoulder when I lean on my elbow. Leg is still kind of meh.. I went for a fairly long walk yesterday outside, maybe 5 miles or more. No pain in leg at all, but today a bit sore. I'm easing my way back into the gym next week, just some cardio to get the sweats going.. No lifting for at least another week, maybe 2. I will be doing at-home therapy for the shoulder, basic rotations, band pulls, and broomstick holds..

Overall, biggest concern is getting my quads ready. Everyone I've spoken with about TM says quads, quads, quads.. So I'll be doing lots of stairs if I can, coupled with long low-level cardio to keep the HR up and push me further along to success.

Bigger update..

Back in the gym! Finally! I forgot to post from Monday, but I was able to do a good bunch of sets on the circuit machines. Kept the weights low, and reps high...more of a muscle warm up for coming up workouts. Felt good, no real pain in shoulder. Also did some basic quick cardio, and leg pain is fairly low. Keeping the run to just 1/2 mile, but will go up by 1/2 mile each week until I hit 3, then will work on a faster time before progressing distance to 5+. Finishing cardio is (2) 5 minute sets on the stairclimber, using a calorie burner interval program. Extra set of 5 minutes added each week. Really works the legs, better than I thought.

Today was even better. Did the same cardio, then went upstairs to the weight room to lift for the first time in months. Felt so damn good!!! Did some light bench work, lat pulls, bi and tri, and a little shoulder work.

Flat Bench -
135 x 10
135 x 12
185 x 3
135 x 10

Lat Pulls - Wide overhand grip - Last rep each set held for max time, back is tight as hell, feels so good..
90 x 25
120 x 15
150 x 5
90 x 10 - real slow reps

Straight Bar Curl to Overhead Tri Extension
Empty Bar - 30# x 25 - Bi and Tri
50 x 15 - 50 x 20
70 x 10 - 70 x 15

Seated DB Con Curl - Right to Left, repwated 3x w/no rest, one giant set, 21 reps ea/side.
25# x 7,7,7,7,7,7

Single Cable Tri Pushdown
30 x 50
50 x 20

Cross Delt Raise - Very Limited ROM, need to be very careful with delts for a while. Pissing them off was the reason I was out for so long. Just did some cross side pulls, about 12" motion with 10lb and 20lb. Feels alright, but I want to rest them until next week. Might just do a bitching quad death session Friday instead, give upper body a long rest.

Yup.. Getting better is a good thing..still have long way to go, only about 7 weeks till the Mudder.. I'll be ready, just a matter of how bad it hurts.

Bring the pain.
