A little update for y'all...

He went through three weeks of conditioning with his team. He was much more explosive and quick this year. He's still not anywhere near the top of the herd, but he's a far cry better than last year. Kind of "middle of the pack."

One area that's still lacking is endurance. We didn't work on it so I'm not really suprised. He can run sprint after sprint much better, but when it comes to running laps he sucks at the bottom of the pack. Something to incorperate next off-season (research to do).

Strength and explosiveness have increased a LOT! He is firing off the line and hitting so hard, he even sent one of his high school volunteer coaches to the ground. We definitely hit the mark in this catagory. He definitely learned how to use his hips and legs to drive his oponent.

He is one week into try-outs and he's really standing out amongst the other linemen. The coaches have already tagged him as the starting left tackle so he's super excited. We won't have to sweat it out for cuts this year.

Took his first big hit to the knee which sent him out of the last 45 minutes of practice, but he came right back the next night and gave it 100% effort without any fear. I think I was most proud of that and it shows that he's developing mental toughness as well.

Our in-season workout plan is very simple; taking a page from Bill Starr's book...

Sunday - Trap Bar Deadlift (moderate reps and sets)
Tuesday - Push-up Ladders or Military Press
Friday - Heavy Prowler Pushes (short 15 yard pushes)

Just looking to maintain or make slight progress through the season.

thanks for the update OR,

thats great to see that all the hard work in the off season is shining through now.
its great for your son to see this also as its very transferrable to all areas in life.
as is the mental toughness side of things.

Prowler Pushes (15 yards)
80 lbs x 2 laps
125 lbs x 2 laps
170 lbs x 2 laps
225 lbs x 2 laps

Very short, very heavy, very fun.
The cool thing was that my son said he could do three plates but he didn't think he could do four plates. I told him, "Never Limit Yourself!" He smashed four plates...

He had some sore legs and feet from all the pushing and the heat made him sick to his stomach one night. Other than that he's been doing pretty well.

Warm Ups (2 rounds each)
Jumping Jacks x 10 reps
Body Squats x 10 reps
Bear Crwls x 10 yards

Workout (3 rounds each)
Jump Squats x 5 reps
Assisted Chin ups x 3 reps
Push ups x 10 reps

Finisher (4 rounds)
115 lb Sled Drags x 20 yards

Notes:
This is the workout that I settled on. He will be doing this workout on Mondays and Fridays which are non-practice and non-game days. Just want him to keep some strength and power built up through the season. He does enough pushing at practices, so no goblet squats or Prowler for the rest of the season. He not only made the team but he made the starting O Line quick tackle. He's already knocked over 40 kids on their asses in the last 4 weeks of tryouts and practices. He also got to play some defensive tackle in the scrimmage game last night and ended up having 1 sack, 4 backfield tackles, and one fumble recovery in about 10 plays. I think he'll see some D-Line time in the games too. Going to be a fun season.
