09/03/2009: Bench Day

Workout Time: 46 minutes

Workout Grade: A-

Notes: I was nearly asleep 30 minutes prior to working out. But, i still had a very good workout.

I wasn't sure where to start with weight on the 2-board press, so I slapped on 275 just to err on the safe side. All went well. I stuck to one minute rest between bench press sets, and 2 minute rest between rep work on 2-boards, T-Bars and Yates rows. The workout went a little faster then I imagined, which is good.

For my rep work, I am using old-school strongman Doug Hepburn's rep system. You start at 3 sets of 6, and work your way up one rep per workout. So, you go from 6-6-6 to 6-6-7 next workout. Hepburn went up to 8-8-8, but I'm not sure if I will go past 7's. Time will tell.

I did go over 6 reps on the 2-boarders. I wanted to see how many I could do safely, and not to failure.

Bench Press
225 (70%) x 8 sets x 3 reps (1 minute rest between sets)

2-Board Press
275 x 9
275 x 6
275 x 6

Yates Rows
175 x 6
175 x 6
175 x 6

T-Bar Rows
150 x 6
150 x 6

It gave me some good chest work. I was at about 85% 1RM, and it actually felt pretty darn good. But for me, if I don't get heavy reps in, my bench dives. Some guys can use 2-3 reps and built bench, but I struggle with that approach.

09/05/2009: Squat Day

Workout Time: 50 minutes

Workout Grade: A-

Notes: Well, I under-estimated Louie Simmons. And, I over-estimated my intelligence. I thought I would need some squat reps after my lower volume squat work. But, I could barely function after my 8x3 sets.

My hamstrings, butt, lower back, and legs were fried. On top of that, my brain was fried. The limited one minute rest between squat sets really turned them into an ordeal.

I could barely finish the rest of my workout. I was insta-sore.

Squats
320 (70%) x 8 x 3 (one minute rest between sets)

Note: I also sank as deep as humanly possible on every rep of these sets. It was as ATG as I can get.

If I am not mistaken, the percentages used for WS workouts are to be done off of the box...

Normally I do box squats. That is what I tested my max off of. But I decided today to hit ass to grass. I got wicked left knee tendinitis by wide stance box squatting 6 months ago, and I am trying to figure out what is causing it.

When I narrow stance squat, I feel instantly better. I tried wide stance, ass to grass, and no knee tendinitis. I get the feeling somehow my knees don't like box squats, and I don't know why.
