My standing BB Curls PB was a bittersweet moment. I had some mild discomfort on the eccentric phase of the last rep of the 425 deadlift and it quickly deteriorated from there. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit devasted. It appears as though deadlifting is out for awhile along with back squats. My 2 favorite lifts. Some of you may think it was stupid of me to lift so heavy on my deadlifts today. Lifting heavy on deads is the only way I know how to do them. I can't stand doing light deadlifts. I didn't make my back any worse, but I didn't do it any favors either.

Starting next week, I'm going to go on a 3 day program (M,W,F). Push Press and Benching do not irritate my lower back whatsoever. I'm quite confident Donkey Squats will not bother my low back. If they do, I will move on to Front Squats. I just came up with this routine based on what I have done this past week and has not caused me pain.

Monday:
Push Press
BHTNP
Face Pulls
Side lateral Raises
Pull Ups (Alternate Grip -wide, close (Palms facing), chins
Cardio

Wednesday:
Donkey Squat
Goblet Squat
Frog Squat
GHR's
Standing BB or Preacher Curls
Cardio

Friday:
Bench Press
Incline Bench Press
CGBP
BW Dips
Pull Ups (Alternate Grip -wide, close (Palms facing), chins
Cardio

I still hope to reach my goal of a 500 lb deadlift. My current situation is just going to make that dream even more special & sweet when it comes true.

Looking real strong on the pulls. Do heavy sumo pulls hurt your back? As far as I remember, you've never gone heavy on those have you?

You will get there Jim. Sometimes the best way to train the deadlift is to take a break from the deadlift.

How are your sumos by the way? Mine stunk but seemed to come up quickly. Wondering if they bother your back?

Thanks Al & Steve. I was planning on doing Sumo's, and then It completely slipped my mind when I started to lift. I reckon I'm so used to doing conventionals and/or I'm just getting forgetful in my senior years It's convenient to be able to blame things on age.

The last time I pulled Sumo, I did 315 X10 on my assistance lifts during 531.

Do you guys think I should try some light Sumo's next week?

315x10 is pretty solid. That's about where I was on sumos a year ago.

Congrats on the PBs and PBRs Jim!! Great to see you back at it again. With deads, I think if you like the one style just stick with it especially if you're not going for competing where one may get you a few pounds more on the pull than the other style.
