THE SQUATATRON SESSIONS CYCLE 1 WEEK 2 DAY 2 DEADLIFTS

It is becoming clear to me that my lower back really needs a full week to recover fully. I was not 100% or I would have been able to triple 480 raw. However, this is the most weight I have ever repped raw and that of course makes me very happy. Grip was solid and tremors were mild, thus the bar never rolled in my hands. I did think of strapping up for today, but I just knew I didn't have the strength anyway and I stubbornly did not want to reduce the weight, so I thought it would be cool to rep this weight, and it was!!

I am a day late entering this write-up as I had quite an emotional day yesterday. I have now completed all my goals I set out to accomplish 10 years ago, exactly 49 days before my 50th birthday at the age of 49:

I quit smoking
I quit drinking
I went gluten free and subsequently mostly Paleo
I have achieved great health - in fact one of the healthiest 49 y/o men in Canada as confirmed by Internal medicine, despite Birdshot & Facet Joint Arthritis.
I have squatted 450 with little breakdown in form
I have deadlifted my dream of 500
Last, but not least, my blood pressure is under control and almost perfect at 123/80 with an insanely awesome 49BPM resting heart rate, which tells me I am in absolutely amazing cardiovascular health.

My 40th Birthday represented the beginning of an end to my train wreck of a life. My upcoming 50th birthday will represent an amazing life transformation into one of the happiest people on Earth.

Instead of my past tormenting me, it now inspires me. So much so, I now believe I am Super Jim and I now have 2 new SuperJim shirts and a pair of chucks to match. Jay - you will never know how much you giving me that nickname meant and has helped me finally believe in myself. Somebody actually thought what i was doing was super, when I really could do nothing right my whole life. Steve, LtL, and Lisa of course have all been life changers for me as well.

For those that do not know, my life began with a Father who never accepted me as his as he convinced himself my Mom cheated on him. I did not find this out until I was about 16. I could never figure out why my dad shunned and hated me, when i didn't do anything to him. he even destroyed all my baby photo's, except 1 which I found 48 years later after cleaning out the house I grew up in after Mom's passing in early 2012.

I was devastated when i found out and eventually started drinking, smoking, and being involved in crime. Thoughts of murdering him and committing suicide were quite common in my mind. The turning point came when I was almost sentenced to 5 years in prison. The Alberta Court of Appeal upheld my probation. What a close call that was. This gave me the strength to go to college and get a career going. After college, I got back into lifting and met Mrs Squatter in the gym. We had a daughter, and after 8 years of raising her I was able to get back in the gym.

However, one piece of business was never dealt with. I had to somehow find a way to forgive my now late Father. I ended up seeing a shrink. She managed to pry out of me during 1 intense session all of my feelings that I blamed myself for what had happened to me and the years of mental abuse by my father. I blamed myself for the divorce and the hardships I put on my brother, who was forced to raise my sister and I since Mom and dad both turned to the bottle and became alcoholics, for which I also blamed myself. I blamed myself for everything. It was my fault for even being born.

After that session, I was able to find true forgiveness for my Father and my life has been nothing but great ever since, leading up all the way to December 26th 2013.

So many things have happened along the way, such as the suicide of my best friend's father, a car accident in which I should have been killed, and of course joining this forum, my first meet, all of which have had a huge impact on the healing process. A big part of the healing process involves sharing my past with you, as opposed to sandbagging it even more.

My lifting life began when I was in high school. I was never any good at any sport and struggled in phys ed class, until 1 day when the teacher took us into the new weight room. Our High school, as luck and fate would have it, was the only one in town with a weight room. Even tho it was hard as fuck for me, the teacher saw something in me and told me I had the physique and the passion to do something great with the iron. I, of course, did not believe him, lacking any confidence whatsoever, and brushed it off.

Over all these years, I somehow managed to hang onto that and I always fell back into the iron when I needed it.

I now have a life worth living. This is the impact lifting has had on my life. This is why it is so emotional to me. It really is a miracle I can even lift anything. My whole life I have always wondered where God was. Once i found forgiveness, he performed a miracle for me that will enable me to lift, the one thing that makes my life complete, outside of my wife and daughter. You see, my facet joint arthritis doesn't hurt. It should. In fact, The Sports Medicine Doc cannot believe it doesn't hurt. he said I am the first case ever in which it doesn't hurt the patient. He said it is the worst pain imaginable in which there is no treatment or cure. There is no medical or earthly explanation for the lack of pain in my lower back. Even with the inflammation healing due to my diet and custom supplements, the arthritis should still be causing me a life of Hell. But it is not, and in fact my lower back feels like a million bucks.

The way I see it, is that I have already been to Hell and back, and God has given me a second chance at a life full of lifting.

Moving forward, anything I accomplish with the iron, and even in life, will be gravy. The next 50 years are going to be something special.

For the life of me, I'll never understand how a parent can write off and/or disown a child, no matter what age. I am sure glad he has a good father now.

Thanks Chris! I tried to summarize it the best I could. When I found out you and I were about the same age, I couldn't wait to sub your journal and I love reading all your sessions and hopefully be able to help you as many members here have helped me.

Your words mean alot Henry. My past has never inspired me until this past year, once I was able to forgive. No better feeling than ultimately choosing the right path.

I know!! No smile! I must have been feeling to beat up by the session!

I have thought about a book, like JB mentioned awhile ago, but when I mentioned it to my family, I just got a blank stare like "you write a book? Still thinking of it tho. Maybe a bit of humbleness in me thinking is my life really that interesting?

THE SQUATATRON SESSIONS CYCLE 1 WEEK 2 DAY 3 BENCH

Verrrrrrrry interesting sesh today. original plan was to ramp up to 235 and do 3 sets of 5 reps each. Well, on the 1st set i could barely muster the 2nd rep. I should be able to get at least 5. last week I did 225 X8. So, I tried again, this time taking off 5 lbs, and could barely crank out a triple. So, I thought, reps are out today and singles in, as the first rep of those 2 sets were just fine.

After the heavy singles (well, heavy for me anyway haha) the 225 X5 felt just fine. Odd that I couldn't rep that kinda weight until after some heavy singles. I reckon my body is telling me it prefers this style of bench training - ramp up to some heavy-ish singles, and then do rep work.

Rows went really well. Pull ups were funny - last week I did 3, 4,5. This week it was the opposite - 5,4 and then 3.

Bench Press
I paused most of the following reps. I wanted to pause the 275, as that would have been a paused PR, but it wasn't long enough.
Bar X5
135 X5
155 X3
185 X2
205 X1
220 X1
235 X2
230 X3
245 X1
270 x1
275 X1 Vid
225 X5 Vid
225 X5
225 X5

Pendlay Rows
250 X6
250 X8 Vid
250 X8

CGBP
190 X8
190 X8
190 X8

Pull Ups
BW X5
BW X4
BW X3

Feeling pretty trashed after all that. I also need some new wrist wraps as the ones I have now self-loosen between putting them on and by the time I am ready to press.

Selfie of me watching the Chicago Blackhawks vs. St Louis Blues. My selfie's must be taken using a tripod and a camera with a swivel LCD screen Haha
