Close Jim. Your form and leverage looks good. Next time try that "power clean" mentality and explosively stand up as fast as you can. Try to generate as much speed as possible off the floor.

Looking good Jim. Are you using chalk yet?

Agree with Steve on the pull. Get it up faster and you'll finish it.

Thanks Big Al!! My Squats have actually come a long way while you were away. I am using liquid chalk. My grip is not an issue at all on singles. The chalk prevents the bar from rolling in my hands.

I will for sure work on the speed then. I always listen to your golden advice!!

SQUAT SESSION

This morning I planned on doing squats and bench, but it turned into a marathon squat session.

Squats
115 X5
135 X5
185 X5
225 X5
245 X5
270 X5
295 X5
315 X5
315 X2
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1
335 X1

This morning turned into a big mental breakthrough for me. The 295 set went really well, so I thought I would do set of 5 @315. It did not go very well formwise. I did stay upright for the most part, but could not hit depth. I then decided to try it again for a double, maybe a triple. I had more success with this, but still not great.

It seems that when I see 3 PPS on the bar and have to rep it, I get nervous and seem to lack confidence, still to this day. However, when I know I just have to do a single, I don't seem to get nervous and over-think it. Thus, I decided to do some singles.

Right from the first single, I was having issues. I was either leaning, or not hitting depth. Terrible inconsistency, yet I felt strong and had good energy. As the sets wore on, I got angrier and angrier with myself.

I know I have the strength. I have the knowledge. I have the support. All of you believe in me, why don't I believe in myself? No more f*cking next time. I just kept on going until I got a half a$$ed decent single with depth. The video of 335 X1 below was the 12th attempt.

As I said earlier, this morning was a huge emotional turning point for me. All my life I have lacked self confidence. My father initiated it. Career Counselors in high school told me to forget being a pilot. There were no jobs and too expensive. My mom's second husband told me I was no good for nothing. All my dreams and aspirations were extinguished. So much potential down the drain. Some people have asked me before "why didn't you go to University?" I simply did not think I could do it, despite having honors in high school. I was a straight A & B student. In College, I was a straight A student. However, the course I took wasn't my passion - I sort of fell into it. It was better than nothing.

Well, I have big passion for lifting. No longer will I allow all those SOB to get in my way. It has to stop, and now guys. All of you are such a huge part of my life. Thanks so much.

With all that said, I think I am getting the hang of this. I am able to naturally use my hips to spread those knees. I find if I can generate the right amount of speed, I lean alot less. An finally, the knees out of course makes a nice hole for me to squat into. Combining these 3 elements makes for a great squat in my case.

That's been my suspicion all along, but I never want to get pushy. I know it's hard. I lack confidence on some squats too.

Now that you know the issue, smash the issue. Do 315 singles. Do them with the "do or die" confidence. What's the worst thing that can happen? Failure? Crawl from under the rack and try again.

When I step up for heavy squats I literally have to find ways to stop thinking, so you're not alone. This mental game is challenging, but at least you are facing it straight on. This is part of the next step.

Keep that form natural feeling, don't overthink, focus on your big form cues, and nail it!

I swear I'm going to come to Canada for a weekend and help. What city are you in again?

Jim, you are an amazing human being. You're making it look easy! That 12th 335 was awesome!

Now, it's easy to agree with BtB, but others have mentioned it before too, Al comes to mind. Confidence is huge! Just go after it! You can obviously do it, and if you have a bad day, eff it. Get it next time. I don't predict too many bad days for you as hard as you work anyway.

Very happy for you!

If confidence is an issue, it wouldn't hurt to have a session or two with some fellow Canucks if you can find any close enough. Squatting with spotters you trust would help that confidence no end.

I made a promise to myself that I would never leave the JimGym without being satisfied. Leaving it without getting a squat 3PPS or above right was not an option, considering I had the strength and ability to do it.

I surprised myself that that 12th single was not as hard as I thought it was going to be, thus a great breakthru for me. Getting below parallel on squats of 3 PPS + is a huuuuuge deal to me.

To follow up Steve, I think my fear was that I couldn't do the 3 PPS+ squat properly. I have had so many bad squats this past year, which tended to fuel my lack of confidence came back to haunt me.

Once again, great advice to focus on the cues Steve. I have been reviewing what I have to do quickly after I unrack it. However, as you said, if I just review my cues I will not overthink it. I want to be more aggressive and get some speed into it as well.

I live In Calgary, Alberta. Calgary is in the Foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Banff is about 40 mins away from the City Limits. It would be a dream come true to lift with you Steve. If you don't make it here, I will come to Wisconsin.
