I also had a brief moment of despair. There's this one dude at the gym. I'll call him Tattoo Guy. His name is actually Mike. People call him "Big Mike," which is a misnomer, because there's another Mike (Black Mike) who is bigger than Big Mike, but no one wants to call him "Black Mike" (for obvious reasons). I'll just continue to call "Big Mike" Tattoo Guy (also for obvious reasons).
That entire paragraph gave me a good laugh. Your level of comedic genius is under appreciated.

He was benching for easy reps the same weight that almost killed me last week on deadlifts. I felt so small and insignificant.
Don't we all.

Ice is a good thing. I was covering for a buddy at work the last couple of days. I did a lot of lifting and stacking of boxes. Not too heavy, mostly in the 7 to 25 pound range. Some a lot more (75 pounds). Some a bit less (2 pounds). My elbows are complete and utter toast. Perhaps the (for me) heavy rows on Sunday played a part too. My session tonight suffered a bit.

Tuesday, 5/24/11

Squat
45x5
145x5
165x5
190x5x2

OHP
55x5
65x5
75x5
85x5
100 N/A - I unracked it and made a couple of attempts, but my elbows were barking so bad. It was remarkable that I got the 75 and 85 pound sets.

By now I was a bit concerned about my deads. I thought about bailing out on them, but decided to try and see how far my elbows would let me get...

Deadlift
135x5
230x5
265x5
290x5
340x5

Success! I reached my target. No problems. I even got a bit cocky. A friend of mine was watching me, so without any strain in my voice, I held the last rep and asked, "How's that look?"

"Just fine."

"Is it legal?"

"Yep."

He's worked out with some big lifters back in the day, and he told me that I might want to look up at the ceiling and really pull my shoulders back at lockout in order to prevent injury. I'm thinking that by hyperextending my back I'm just asking for trouble. Any thoughts?

Not to alarm anyone, but just to chronicle that which is "The Saga."

I've been feeling a bit off the past couple of days. Not in a good way either. I'm hoping I'm not suffering from anything more than stress, lack of sleep, and too much coffee. I found a lesion under my tongue yesterday. I can't get in to a doctor until next week, but I have a scheduled appointment at Mayo the following week. I feel a bit better today than yesterday, so I'm hoping it's just a "thing" that will pass. My mouth, tongue, neck, and cheek are starting to come back to life and maybe the nerves are repairing just enough so that I'm getting some sensations. Anyway, I'll lay off the coffee and Coke, and try to get some quality shut eye. The fact that things are dissapating a bit helps to settle me down.

I will keep y'all posted.

Thursday, 5/26/11

Squat
45x5
145x5
165x5
190x5
250x3
190x8

BP
45x5
90x5
105x5
120x5
160x3
120x8

I paused and popped every rep this time. THe problem is that I got sloppy and didn't keep my back tight. So much to think about. Such a complicated lift.

Seated Cable Rows (Close Parallel Grip) 215 12/10/10

Oh man, I hope it's nothing more than some solid sleep will cure. Best of luck on that front. I'll be thinking of you.

Nice sessions, too!

I had to laugh when you told the Tatoo guy story. there's a couple guys I lift with sometimes, I call them "The Cop", and "Tiny" for obvious reasons . Anyway, the cop, who's not that much bigger than me, asked me to spot him as he was benching more than I can squat. Tiny, who is just smaller than a truck, was repping on the bench with almost as much as I can bench and squat combined! He asked the Cop to spot him.

Thank you, and thank you, MikeM. I must have been on the very edge of overtraining/stressing out/anxeity or something. I had a decent bit of sleep on Thursday night and felt quite a bit better on Friday. I was able to capture a 3 hour nap Friday afternoon. By Saturday morning I was back in business. Still, its hard to describe the emotions I go through when I have the slightest twinge. Its kind of like the time your dad let you borrow the car and you started hearing noises or feeling vibrations. Or setting out on a long road trip only to have the "Check Engine" light come on. In my mind, I was making arrangements for surgery, planning my funeral, cherishing every moment with my kids, etc.

I'm much better now. I still have the appointment at Mayo Clinic on june 8. I'll keep that. The last time I was there for a checkup they noticed that my right tonsil was larger, or more prominant than my left. They weren't worried about it, but I'm sure they'll be curious. If things still don't look normal, they'll probably want to investigate further. To what end, I don't know. I'm afraid to ask.

Good session today. I've had lots of sleep the past few days. I need to get to bed earlier. The problem is, I don't get the TV until 10:30 p.m. Plus I have to get online and BS with y'all. Then there's those darn Angry Birds...

Good lift today though...

Sunday, 5/29/11

Weight 217.5 pounds

Squat
45x5
150x5
170x5
195x5
220x5
250x5 - the most I've had on my back in over a year. This ties my recent 5RM (January, 2010). My all-time 5RM is 270 (for sure) back in 2008 (I think). Twenty pounds to go until I tie it.

BP
45x5
95x5
110x5
125x5
140x5
160x5

Chinups (palms toward me) - alternated during BP's
1/1/1/1/1 - there, 5 sets of 1. Time to start doubling up on some of those sets.

Kroc Rows
Left
40x10
80 12/4/2/x

Right
40x10
80 13/3/2/x

This week has turned into an impromptu week off. No big deal. I just needed a break. There was some family matters and there was just no way I could fit in a regular lifting week. So I bailed.

I was able to lift last Friday. Nothing remarkable, but something very interesting happened at the gym. I will post that up later.

Today I have a scheduled checkup at the Mayo Clinic. I'm a bit apprehensive. I'm feeling fine. In fact this is the best I've felt in over a year. It's just that I've had some "issues" recently. That and the last time I was in (February) they noticed my right tonsil was more prominent than my left. They weren't alarmed, just curious. If it isn't back to normal today, I'm sure they may want to do something.

I'll keep you posted.

big val out.
