Monday, 5/9/11

As I punched out of work Monday night, a supervisor caught me and said, "Hey big val, doing anything special tonight?"

Na," I said, "just eat dinner, do dishes, then go to the gym and set a new PR." All this was said very matter of factly, and as a matter of fact that's just what I did. It ain't braggin' if you can do it.

Thanks fella. You are quite correct. I have come a long way in the past few years. I remember eight years ago or so that i took a fitness test at the YMCA and honestly couldn't do 80 pounds. I even had to have the little trainerette lift off for me...on a machine. I still couldn't do it for more than four reps. This past year I've lost a good four months of training. It's remarkable I'm able to lift that much at all.

Progress is progress. I stand beside my prediction of an 1100 pound total at my first meet, 900 of which will be squat and deadlift.

Thursday, 5/12/11

I skipped my mid week deadlift session again this week. Mother's Day threw my lifting schedule off, and rather than force the issue, I thought it better to take an extra day off and get back into the regular routine next week. I think I'm at the point where I can train deads every other week. My body's old. Give me a break.

OK I haven't been sleeping well this week. Maybe that had something to do with my failure at 175. My target reps were 3 today, then attempt 5 on Sunday. I'm trying to decide right now if I should just repeat this week, or reset back 20 pounds and make another run. I'll chew on things this weekend. My spotter pointed out that I wasn't tight enough on the first rep and that made my second rep difficult and my third rep impossible. I'll eat and sleep and see how I feel Sunday.

My thinking is that when I was on 531 (which I'll be revisiting soon), I was deadlifting every eight to ten days anyway with no bad effects. My job requres a lot of lifting. There's no chance of me detraining.
