Ok so after a pretty long lay off from training, I decided to get back to it and stop making excuses for myself. I picked up a power rack, bench, and about 400+ lbs of weight and started 531 with the bbb assistance template. While it was fun and I was getting my strength back, I felt like i was concentrating more on the assistance work than the heavy lifts. I always loved lifting heavy and I think my body responds well to it also so I decided to switch to a strength focused routine.

I'm starting Stronglifts 5x5 at 50% of my 531 training maxes... This weight is very low and with the progression of this routine I feel like that will work in my favor in the long run. I hope to run this program for a while and I may reach out for advise on maybe adding assistance work down the road. Thanks for looking and any advise is welcomed

I ran SL when I first started lifting. I think its a great program until the weights get heavy. Depending on your age, only advice I would give is dropping to 3x5 when things do get heavy. I think 5x5 when you are getting close to your 5RM is too much weight with too much volume to recover from 3x/week. This will of course lead to a stall, and also resulted in a shoulder injury for me. Dropping to 3x5 might help allow better recovery and longer progress.

Again though, other than the volume I really like the program, especially sticking to the basics rather than a bunch of fluff work.

Good luck!

Thank you guys! Good call got2squat. I haven't thought that much ahead but I think that will be my plan when I get to that point. Maybe I'll incorporate that into a "deload" week also every once in a while so I don't get too wiped out to quick.

Monday (everything in lbs and weight x reps)

Squat: warm-up- barx5, 65x5, 95x3
Work sets- 115x5,5,5,5,5

Squats started off a little rough considering its been a little over 2 weeks since I squatted (or really trained for that matter) due to a nasty stomach flu. Im the type that cant stop moving or my joints will start killing me.

Bench press: warm-up- barx5, 55x5, 65x3
Work sets- 80x5,5,5,5,5

Bench press were WAY too light for me but that was the plan with starting this routine. My bench numbers were always my best cause of ridiculous training partners (if you look up "how to skip leg day" on youtube, that was pretty much my life for about 2 years haha). No matter what I said it was bench and abs everyday and maybe curls here and there haha.

Bent-over rows: warm-up- barx5
Work sets- 75x5,5,5,5,5

All in all im very happy to get back after my off week(s)... The weight was very light and embarrassing so its good that I train in my garage haha. Im sure in a few months ill be singing a different tune. Now time to eat
