Strongman Writeup!

Did my first real strongman competition today. There were 10 competitors, age 23 and up. Notables included last year's winner and runner up, as well as the winner of the last several Atlantic Canada's Strongest man, who didn't compete last year. There was also a number of lesser known strongmen, and one of Canada's most well known and decorated powerlifters, John MacDonald. There were also several of us who had never really done a strongman before. The events were as follows:

Farmers Walk
300 lbs per handle for 50 feet, 350 lbs per handle for 50 feet

Press Medley
200, 220, 240 lb kegs, 280 lb log, 300 lb axle

Tire Flip
1200 lb tire

Truck Deadlift
Starting at what we think was ~700 lbs, adding 100 lbs per rep

Atlas Stones to ~50"
250, 270, 310, 360, 400


In the first event, Farmers Walk, I had absolutely no problem picking the implements. I went a total of 18 feet with about 3 total picks. Walking was by far my weak point. I think I could have struggled another few feet, but I just called it there.

In the second event, Press Medley, I had never successfully pressed even the first keg (200 lbs) in practice. However, today it shot right up! The 220 lb keg proved to be too much for me, however.

I was excited for the tire flip, as I thought I had a legitimate chance at finally getting it today, after having practiced it twice (and having got it to my waist). I was proved wrong today, as I struggled to even break it three inches off the ground. Not sure if my troubles were due to it being on grass today (I did have cleats), or because I was gassed from two events prior. Oh well.

Truck deadlift, I put on my old squat suit that I had not worn for approximately 20 kg of BW. Well, I should say that I attempted to put it on. Not even close. I put on one of John's suits very easily, but it didn't help -- couldn't get a single rep.

Prior to the last event, Atlas Stones, I was consistently getting ninth place. I managed to get the 250 and 270 lb stones in a fairly fast time, which apparently netted me eighth in the event!

Overall, I still finished ninth out of ten competitors, but I matched my goal of not coming last, and I did several steps better than my last practice session. Most importantly in this case, I had fun and I remained injury free (although I'm pretty stiff right now!)
