The Road to 600
27 May 2013

Deadlifts Max Test Day
60kg x 8
100kg x 8
130kg x 5
150kg x 3
170kg x 1
195kg x 1
210kg x 1
217.5kg x 1 PB
220kg x 0 – 3goes at this and no joy

I should be happy with the 2.5kg PB , but im not ,really annoyed as I had hoped to get 225kg out today and a cheeky effort at 227.5kg which would have been a 500lb pull.

Video of the 3 fails below for you guys to pick apart/cheer yourselves up looking at ,
could have hitched the lockout but that’s not gonna get me white lights on meet day
Not really sure where to go from here with regard to deadlift progression - in June 2012 I was pulling 205kgs…
so 12.5kgs/28lbs in almost a year…that sucks…

Great work Alan! Congrats on the big PR! You were right there on the 220, big points for trying it 3 times! Like you said you could have hitched it up, but glad you didn't! I've got no ideas where to go for you on deads honestly. Of all the lifts, deads seem to be so hit and miss depending on the day. I've had days where I could bare move 315lbs and the next week hit a PR. I'm sure some of the smarter lifters here could give you some ideas where to go, training wise ! Keep working hard big guy!!!!!!

The road to a 500 lb pull certainly seems to be a long and twisty one and is as elusive as a Snow Leopard. It has also taken me what seems to be forever to get there. However, I want it so bad I will never, ever give up. I know the frustration tho, as I have also experienced it. For example, in Vegas last November, I pulled the 463 easily and likely could have had much more. However, the feeling I had walking off the paltform was like no other as I truly felt I was now close to 500 and then realistically had a shot at it soon. Well, 7 months later I am still not there. Mind you, we each have different circumstances. but the end result is what counts at a meet. The good news is that you are still inching forward, which is better than backwards.

In the vid, it looked to me like your stance was a bit too narrow. I also cannot tell really how much your hips were raising first, if any really. I am sure the experts around here may have seen more. I would think tho that maybe rack pulls/hip strength may be in order to help you fuck that bar at lockout. It's really cool to see you have no issues getting thee weight off the floor, so that is good news.

Also, perhaps giving a shot at Sumo's may be an option?

Man I wish you were within driving distance. I think a few sessions together and I could have 30 pounds on your deadlift. I hope you take that in a good way. You are a strong puller and there is more in the tank.

Keep driving those hips forward.

Want to see 550 next year.

And looking fit man. Quad size is there.

Those deadlift fails were very close man. It looked easy until near lockout. You seem to give up very quickly on them. Another second or two there from what I can see and you would have locked it out. I would give a deadlift max a go again next week man. Normally I would max out deadlift last to let my cns rest up from the routine. I think if you try this again in a week 220 at least will go.

Again you seem to struggle with the same things that I do. That speed off the floor and the lean back and struggle at lockout is the same as me. If filmed from the side, I reckon we would see you pulling straight up and the bar would be away from your legs instead of right next to them. Get your weight on the heels, think about pulling back and drive your glutes through like the bar is Lucy Pinder.

Shame you couldn't get any video of the 217 but on the plus side you have definitely put on size and are not far off 500 right now with a few technical tweaks. Keep pushing hard. We'll get there eventually

Thanks Jim, was thinking about more rack pulls In the near future alright, I think there are sumo pulls in JB's BIG program so well also be giving them a lash.

Yeah lockout is the issue for sure man, I'm pretty confident I could pull 225/230 to the same point, not that it was easy but the soured of the floor seemed to be there

Thanks Big Al, yeah I am stalking your deadlift videos of late and they are very close In terms of technique..... You have a bit more on the bar however
Also you are right about that bar path, another point for me to work on
