Default Blood lab results

Had a follow-up yesterday with the doc regarding my blood test results.

Basically, the last couple of years of relaxed diet and minimal physical exertion (in the gym) have pushed some numbers into the higher risk categories. Many numbers were still very good and almost all of my genetic markers were favorable.

The good news is, better eating and regular lifting should have a noticeable effect on all the poorer results.
The blood was drawn 12/17/12...before I started eating better and lifting again.

I posted about supplements and generally didn't recommend them. After talking to the doc, here's my revised opinion...certain vitamins/minerals are beneficial to the body, but generally dosing without knowing what you need is usually a waste of time/money. Based on blood labs, it appears you can get more of a vitamin prescription tailored to your condition. Of course, I know there's profit there and some will over-prescribe, but as long as you know the recommendation is backed by science, might as well supplement in a targeted fashion.

In my case, the recommendation was for vitamin D (D3), fish oil and a more potent B-complex (methylated).

Labs also showed mid-range testosterone levels and slightly elevated estrogen levels. I have no baseline for comparison, but based on energy, fat, muscle, etc. I would posit that these numbers are less than optimal compared to 2+ years or more ago. Consequence of aging and lifestyle and fixable.

Looking forward to re-test in 6 weeks.

I was recommended D3 as well. I never see the sun up here. Did you get a specific range for test? I have a friend who had 213 and doc called it "mid range".

When I got tested, I had a vitamin D defiency and real low testosterone. I now take a D3, along with a multi, fish oil, and have a test shot every 10days. If your test levels were 400 or less, and things don't improve by your next visit, go see an endo. General docs only care about basic minimal health, a specialist will understand your goals and will be more willing to help you. Hopefully though you can get things headed in the right direction on your own! Good luck!

That's a good tip about having your blood checked.

I also recently found out about checking your food in terms of vitamins and minerals. Turns out that I am pretty much getting everything I need from food and that my mulit vitamin is not really necessary, and also a lot vitamins and minerals need to be taken with water or fat or in conjunction with something else in order to be absorbed properly, and most of those connections are made naturally when getting the nutrient through food. So, now I only take the multi if I had a bad nutrition day (and I'm trying to avoid those!)

Rock on. Lots of good information in here.

Thanks. Yeah, I'd say you're a year or two overdue!

Test range on labs is 250-1100 ng/dL. My # was 618. Prior was 551 over a year ago, but I wasn't feeling my best then either so this is still apparently low for me. Free test was 83.5 (range 35-155 pg/mL). No prior number for comparison.

Also, estradiol was "high" at 49 pg/mL (range is <= 29). No prior number for comparison.

With hormones, ratios of contra-hormones is as important as the number of any single hormone.

I'm already there. Just started a weekly protocol. 0.75/mLs per week. T Cyp.
Really good doc. Prior DO who specializes in restorative medicine now. He understands that ""normal in range" does not mean "normal" for an individual.

Right on. I think you have a solid approach. Many people don't realize that vitamins are useless without concurrent food and that many vitamins are stored in fat.

Thanks. The details start to matter more as you age, approach your potential or find yourself not in your best condition despite a consistent routine. While I do need to stay on track, more variables are having a greater effect on my results. Never a bad idea to get more info and be flexible with finding solutions.
