Right After Breakfast

Pushups x 20 reps, two second pause at the bottom; I count the cadence.

He also worked on using his hands while blocking. I noticed last night durring practice that he was getting a great initial hit but his hands were NOT in a good position to finish the block. So we spent a little time on it this morning. We'll see if it payed off during practice tonight.

Off topic and weird...

As many of you know my son worked very hard in the off-season on his explosiveness. We wanted him to get off the line with force and speed. We did a ton of exercises geared towards that goal. The problem is that the coaches are kind of old-fashioned and judge all their players on their 40 yard sprint times. So, my son was labeled as non-athletic right from the start. They knew he could hit hard and block so he still made starter. Every night they finish practice with 60 to 80 yard sprints for conditioning. Every night my son comes in last place and the coaches are all yelling at him and looking down on him.

Well, tonight they switched it up and had the team running 20 yard sprints (head coach wasn't there tonight). Well, my son was kicking ass and coming in the top 3 to 5 kids accross the line. Some coaches don't realize that linemen need explosive speed and NOT SPEED ENDURANCE. Hopefully the coaches will open their eyes and judge players by different standards depending on the position they play. Linemen need to be quick to 5 or 10 yards and that's the way we train in the off-season. They need to clock the kids' 10, 20, and 40 yard times to see where they will fit in best for the team. Not every kid is going to be a skills player but they need linemen too; the offense doesn't go anywhere without them.
