Welcome aboard, Jordan! Thank you for your comments. I sure hope 190 will be there next attempt. I think part of my problem is too many warmup sets/reps. From now on during my max sessions, I'm going to chop off a warmup set and maybe scale back on the reps. Regardless of how things turn out on my next 531 wave, I'm going to try a cycle of Smolov Jr. for bench probably sometime in September.

Love it! Reminds me of the occasional in between innings music at Miller Park.

BigV posting after a while. woot. Time to crush PRs post deload.

By the way, I benched today, and was supposed to stick to 190 for work sets. May be subconciously I remember you pushing higher and higher and giving it everything, I simply got tempted to try higher weights for singles.

And got to 200!

Good think I follow the logs here - in some way, each of the logs help me progress. Thanks bigV

Tuesday, 8/21/12

Well, my vehicle finally bit it. We'd been looking at a different set of wheels for a couple of weeks, but cheap bastard that I am, I just didn't want to pull the trigger. In fact, as late as Sunday night I had my wife convinced that with a little TLC, I could keep the old Grand Caravan road worthy for another year or so. All that blew up in my face Monday after work. Luckily I was close to home, and was able to limp it in to the driveway. I came into the house and said, "Let's go get a new one." My wife made a call to a dealer we had been working with, and after dinner last night we were owners of a 2002 Chevy Trail Blazer. Still room for all three kids, plus at least two hockey bags. Just what we needed. I'd be a lot happier about it if I didn't NEED to act right now. There's something to be said about dealing with life's issues on your own terms. Trouble is, it rarely happens that way.

Got a session in this evening. I'm not happy about that either. Seems like the only thing that went right for me was the Pendlay Rows. Unfortunately, that wasn't supposed to be the major focus of my training tonight.

Cycle IV Wave 1 Workout B

Bench Press (alternated with chinups)
45x5
75x5
95x5
110x5
130x3
150x1
170x1
185x1 - Very UGLY!
185 - Fail
135x10 - pissed off set

Chinups (between sets of BP)
1/1/1/x

Pendlay Rows
145x8x3

I don't know what I'm going to do about my bench. I have another PR attempt scheduled in a couple of weeks. After that, I'm going to try a run of Smolov Jr. Hopefully by the end of 2012 I can have something figured out.

Did the chin ups in between the benching wear you out a bit? I find as I reach the (temporary) strength ceiling, longer rests (1:30 - 2:00) and removing any supersetting helps.

I like the sound of Smolov Jr - sounds suspiciously like Smirnov (although I dont think there's a Jr version of Smirnov ).

I am interested to see how the Smolov treats you. I always hear good things about the Smolov cycles for squat, but I have never followed along in a log where someone tried to this for bench.

Good luck bigV
