Default Jerod tests out AAEFX K-Otic

First of all, let me send out a kudos to RippedinMichigan. I was excited to get an opportunity to do some supp logging, and he went above and beyond to make it happen, as well as tossing in some samples outside the logging item.

Disclaimer: I'm neither an AAEFX rep, nor am I a doctor or scientist. My statements are matters of my own opinion and do not represent the opinions of any other individuals or organizations. All statements are made with no promise of reward or fear of reprisal.

Today was my first chance to try out the K-Otic "Grape Grenade", as I received it in the mail following my last workout.

The first thing you notice when starting a new supplement is the packaging, so I'll start there. I was a little surprised at the actual size of the container. Compared to some competitors containers, this seemed quite large for a single scoop serving, but on seeing the scooper I understood why. No positive or negative to this, just different than some recent products I have tried. The label contains some pretty bold statements like "literally going to hit you fast and between the eyes", creating some hype prior to trying it. With the listed 300mg of caffeine per serving though, I suspected this would not be false. The ingredients list shows that this pre-workout actually contains some other AAEFX products, Kre-Alkalyn EFX and Karbolyn, which I consider bonus. I would have been nice to know how much, but as proprietary blends, I understand them not listing it.

The product itself is a very fine powder, with no clumps or separation like I've seen in some other PWO mixes. The smell was pleasant and sort of reminds me of candy. There is a desiccant pouch inside, and a long handled scoop for reaching the bottom of the tall container. Again, the scoop size is larger than some I've used, but considering the one scoop serving, it only makes sense. I had no problem mixing in a water bottle with the recommended 12oz of water and a few shakes.

The taste is a bit sugary, sort of what I would expect grape sweet tarts to taste like. Not overpowering, but definitely sweet. I didn't have any difficulty downing it all at once, and there was no medicine-ish aftertaste. As I do anytime I take a PWO, I started drinking more water as soon as I started lifting.

Let me preface the next part by saying that I'm quite tolerant to caffeine, and usually have a few cups of coffee a day as well as an energy drink or two on occasion. I took my K-Otic about 15 minutes prior to my workout as the label suggested and hit the gym. I didn't wind up getting any sort of "rush" or defining moment where I knew that the drink was taking effect during my workout, however, I did feel a bit more "driven". My heart rate was up quickly, and I was constantly moving around between sets. I had to catch myself when I reached the end of my planned sets for each exercise because I just felt like doing a little more. There was a fairly strong sense of euphoria, almost a buzz, while doing my heavier lifts. I didn't feel any slacking of energy at any point during my workout, and I finished at the gym still feeling ready to just move and do something. Post workout I went back to work, and never felt any crash. The whole experience was more subtle than the packaging and advertising had suggested, but there's no doubt in my mind the energy was there. Aside from the energy, I did feel a little more clarity during my workout. After a few heavy lifts I usually find myself a bit spaced out, but not this time. I was able to focus, remember exactly the sets, reps, and weights I had just used without consulting my log book, or having to pause and consciously focus on what I was thinking about. Today's impressions are all positive, and I'm looking forward to trying this out again with my next workout.

Wrap up

Packaging quality 8/10
The only downside are some big claims on the label. A little less focus on hyping the product is the only change I would make.

Mixing 10/10
Perfect

Taste 9/10
Very candy-like, which is good most of the time, but I can see there being times where the sweet tooth may not be as strong and this could be a bit much.

Effects 9/10
For a product with 300mg of caffeine, and an unknown amount of beta-alanine, I got no beta tingle, and no real "rush", but the end result was great, especially not crashing afterwards.

Overall 9/10
Pretty great product so far. I'm looking forward to great things with this PWO.

I'll be leaving the actual training numbers for the training log, which is linked in my signature.

great review man. Very informative and unbiased! glad you like it as much as i do and everyone else. since you have a pretty high caffeine tolerance you might want to up the scoops a little just give it a try and see how you feel.

Brad, I was thinking about that, but I'm fairly pleased with the amount of stim effect I'm getting right now. To just not quite the on/off sensation I was expecting. If I start to develop tolerance to this ill add a bit more.

We've got the intro out of the way, so from here on out the logging will be a quicker, easier read, as these are just updates.

I made an adjustment today to how I took my K-Otic prior to lifting. I wasn't really in the mood for a sweet drink, so I ended up using about 20oz of water. Taste was a bit more sports drink like, and fairly easy to down. I usually take my PWO in my office as it's about a 5 minute walk to my room, and another 10 minutes to get my stuff and be in the gym ready to go. I took the first half in the office, and drank the rest as I was walking back and getting my logbook. I used a fairly heaping scoop today, but not more than I could get into a single scoop.

Mixing 10/10
I think this will be my preferred method for mixing from here on out. It's a bit more liquid to down, but no one was ever hurt by being properly hydrated, and I felt less thirsty early in the workout.

Taste 10/10
Slightly watered down, but more in line with what I would have designed in if I were engineering a PWO drink. I'm really enjoying grape as a change of pace from the some of the flavors of companies are trying to dream up.

Effect 9/10
Compared to my last squat day, I felt almost no need to sit between sets. To the contrary, I was almost not ABLE to sit still by the last couple sets. Minor pacing and shaking out limbs, but not twitchy or agitated. Still getting a bit of euphoric feeling, but I'm also limiting caffeine intake prior to taking this due to a bad experience with massive headaches in the past from downing coffee all morning and then taking a PWO. I still haven't noticed a definite point where I feel the effects coming on. I only notice that I'm "up" once I've been lifting for a little while. I may fiddle with the timing, maybe add 5 minutes at a time the next few times to be in that sweet spot when I do my first rep.

Overall 9/10
I'm walking out of the gym feeling ready to keep working. Not jittery, not twitchy, and no irritability. I had no issues falling asleep last time, and I don't see any problem with it today either. I take K-Otic about 1:30PM, and as I'm writing this it's 9:16PM and I don't really feel wound up anymore. I don't recall any indicator that K-Otic had worn off, just that it's over. Great things so far. I'm going to do my best to talk myself into some cardio over the weekend and see how the body reacts to cardio with K-Otic.

Time for another edition of Getting K-Otic, I'm your host, Jerod. So today was an awesome workout. I wanted to do some more, but I really didn't know what to continue with, and I was getting pretty hungry as well. I intended to go with 25 minutes prior today rather than 20, however I got sidetracked en route to the gym and it wound up being more like 35. Not a big deal, and no real difference was noted in the intensity of the rest workout, however, the beginning was pretty good today compared to previous days. 30-35 minutes might be the ticket.

Mixing 10/10
Not very likely anything is going to change here, as the product seems consistent throughout the tub. No reason to believe the last scoop will mix any different than the first.

Taste 8/10
Not sure what the issue was today, but the taste was a bit too strong. Most likely connected to the things I'd already eaten and had to drink. However, this is important. I ended up mixing with around 24oz of water to get it watered down enough to drink easily.

Effect 9/10
Same as previous days, plenty of energy, though still not quite as strong as you'd expect from the label and the 300mg of caffeine. I may fiddle with the dosing a little, possibly add a quarter scoop next time just to see if it makes a difference.

Overall 9/10
Had a great workout today, definitely fueled by K-Otic. Minor caffeine let down later, but manageable with a cup of joe.

Quick and dirty today, just like the workout. I powered through my sets with little rest time and still felt great. Set a new deadlift PR, did some heavy ass shrugs, and generally felt great!

Mixing 10/10
As always, just a few shakes of my water bottle and I was ready to rock.

Taste 9/10
I was all over it today. I made sure avoid anything sweet for a few hours prior, including protein. Also made sure I was good and thirsty with a handful of salted almonds. 16oz water and 1 heaping scoop later it was go time.

Effect 9/10
I'm beginning to recognize the starting point when I feel the stims hit. Nothing drastic, but by giving myself half an hour prior, I'm feeling pretty pumped to start the work as soon as I walk into the gym.

Overall 9/10
Awesome day to pull. Felt charged up, ready for action. I'd like to get the beta tingles I've heard people talk about from their PWO, as I see the ingredient listed. Not sure if it's something that's there, but I'm just not feeling it. No complaints though, as I'm feeling like I've got this dosed out properly for my individual needs, and K-Otic is meeting them with great success.

Today was amazing. I added just a little extra sprinkle of K-Otic to make up for a minor lack of sleep and motivation and felt the difference without doubt. Definite smashing going on with just a wee bit more go juice.

Mixing 10/10
I only used the requisite 12oz today, as that's about what was left in my water bottle at the time. There was some extra floating around, but I was thirsty, so who cares.

Taste 8/10
The right amount of water is key. Not enough water, overpowering taste.

Effect 9/10
Great things happened despite not really feeling on top of my game. I had to up the dosing to get there, but still had a great session with lots of enthusiasm. Still looking for more beta-alanine.

Overall 9/10
F'd some weights and PRs up today. When the party really got rolling it was smashing time, and there was no stopping me. I did get a little let down a few hours later, but the increased caffeine and already being tired may have contributed. Recommended K-Otic to a couple people who asked if I take any supps at the gym. I'm not sure if they'll pull the trigger on it, but I was singing it's praises today.

Awesome log, very detailed. I love me some K-Otic. I'm cycling off all supplements right now. Taking a week off from the gym. Next week when I hit it again, I'm sure I'm really gonna miss my K-Otic. Keep it up man. Glad you like it

Thanks bgben. I missed a day because I was away. I still got that workout in, but had to go without.

4/10/13
I needed a pick me up today. A lazy day had set the tone for my workout.

Mixing 10/10
16oz of water and a few shakes and it was rock'n'roll time. Mixing was as good as ever.

Taste 9/10
A decent mix of water and powder with a decent amount of thirst made for a very palatable drink today.

Effect 9/10
The stim was needed today to get me going, and it did it's job. Got the heart rate up and mind focused on the task at hand. I even finished with the energy left to throw in some curls that were not originally intended.

Overall 9/10
Pretty awesome workout considering how I was feeling prior to getting to the gym. Might have been feeling a bit superhuman if I had been pumped prior to taking my pre-gym K-Otic.
