Being a strictly home gym rat, Ihave a Smith machine and have used it for a number of years mainly because of the safety catches it has given that I have no spotter. Having said that, I do believe over use of it has lead me to the shoulder injury I am currently, and have been, dealing with that now hinders my chest presses due to pain. I think the Smith can be useful with calf raises, shrugs, inverted rows, and even bent over bb smith rows. but all in moderation, not consistently like I have done.

This is how I make use of mine. I would also throw in the mix, Glass Style Overhead Presses. (Look up Cutting with Glass, Shoulder Training)
