Age 50+ Goals
My passion for powerlifting is still there, and high. Despite the lessons I learned this year, I am happy about the amazing progress I made, and hopeful about the future. I don't plan on slowing down.
Instead of focusing on a 2000 pound raw total, I am turning my focus to either maintaining, or gaining strength through my 50th birthday. This time will go by quickly and I have no intention of wasting it.
The last 3 years of my life have been my best training years, and if I can play smart and keep my body healthy, I believe I have a shot at several all time raw 50+ world records.

I do not, under any circumstances, want to compete at 308 or SHW any longer. My weight loss journey has begun, I am down 13 pounds already, and headed towards 250 to 270. I think it is fair to say that if I am fortunate enough to compete over the age of 50, it will be in one of the bolded classes above.
220 would be an exceptionally low bodyweight for me, even if I cut to make weight. The 1890 total @ 275 is amazingly hefty for any age. It would be an honor to be within striking distance at the age of 50. I f I am in the ballpark you can bet I will make a run.
The total I really have my eye on is John Mitchell's 1638 total at 242. Because I need a specific goal to zero in on over the long haul, I am going to keep running this through my mind daily until circumstances change.
A lot of things can happen in 4 years. At the end of the day I am enjoying the chase, and will consider it a blessing if my body holds out that long.

I can give you my experiences w/ this although at a much smaller scale.
As you know I love lifting heavy for my puny little self. Simply put it was/is my motivation to lift. Last fall I had given up on the idea of competing so decided to get in better shape (play some b-ball... which I love, lift lighter/higher reps, eat better, etc.). I don't like to cuss, but the best way to describe it...I felt like sh**
My T-levels had dropped, my joints ached, I had no passion, and literally was turning into an old man.
Screw dat...I started lifting heavy again and really struggled at first because of my joints. Now I am planning to enter my first meet as well as running it and getting others to join in.
Goals for 49 (which I will be the day before the meet), just compete & total at least 900# and if things go well...950#.
I am goal oriented, so goal for 50 (if I survive)...1,000# club.
I believe the key is passion. I think those world records at 50 would be awesome, not just for yourself, but Erin (??), grandkids, etc. You will be healthier at a lower wt, but don't get in a huge hurry. I have not lost any ability to get stronger from 46-49, but I do feel a little more beat up and the need to watch what I'm doing more. Point is Do Not Focus on Maintaining!
1,466# @ 148# & 50....woah. I think I will stick w/ the more local events.
That may have been more than I've ever typed in my 1,000 posts. LOL

I would echo my buddy Will, Storm, and add this. Keep in mind, every day, who you are doing this for. Is it for others and records or you and your family? I am doing the same introspection, as I turn fifty in a few months. While the records give me some numbers to shoot for and stoke my competitive nature, they are just the means to the end... to make sure that I am healthy enough to care for my wife and play with my future grand kids, to not be that guy who is so broken down at 65, that I shuffle around like this.
