That's right, it's something I've noticed going into competition. If I had just maxed once, it wouldn't have the same effect. It usually takes a month of progressively heavier singles to truly realise the gains from regular training.

For a non-competitor I wouldn't recommend a month as it's far too much of a disturbance in your regular training, I would recommend a few attempts over the course of 1-2 weeks. If you do this once every 6 months or so you should know whether your training is heading in the right direction, assuming an increased 1RM is a goal of yours.
