I used to do the same thing. It wasn't till practicing for P/L were the head had to stay on the bench, that I trained keeping my head down.

I know for me, it also helped kept the shoulders back and lats compressed for me.

I raise my head now when benching, but just because the feds I lift in allow it. If I raise my head to early in the decent, I will flatten out and my stomach actually moves away from the bar. I have to wait until just before the touch to "take a peek" and get the press.

Lots of people raise their head at the bottom of the movement, before the press. Andrey Malanchiev shunts his whole body.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him floor press over 500lb's. More in his slingshot. He's looking to bench 900+ in his next full meet.
