Default Cheap(er) alternative for fractional plates

Recently, I decided to look around for fractional plates so that I could add weight at increments of less than 5 lbs at a time, since 5 lbs is a pretty big jump. I came across these washers: McMaster-Carr

They weigh 10 oz. each so adding one washer to each side of the barbell will add roughly 1.25 lbs to the bar. If you buy 6 washers you can add 1.25 lbs at a time until you can use the 2.5 lb weights which you probably have at your gym. It comes out to around $15 with shipping which is way cheaper than the Iron Woody fractional set which I think is around $50.

Hope this helps

Great post SO. It never crossed my mind that washers might fit on a barbell.

Nice just saved me like $35 gonna order some. I was gonna go to Dick's or home depot to see if they had something like this, it fits around an olympic bar right?

Also do you know of any magnets that you could stick to the plates? Was watching a video and Rippetoe had magnets he stuck to a pulley stack so it got me thinking, not sure where to buy/how much they are.

Plate Mates are magnets that you can stick on. I have a set and like using them when the routine calls for micro-loads. Welcome to PlateMates!

For the budget-minded person, you could use some magnets out of old car stereo speakers.

Can't find a way to get them online, how much do they cost?

Yeah maybe I'll go to the junkyard and salvage some stuff

I bought mine years ago at a Sporting Goods Store. I don't remember the cost. Sorry.
