Now I wonder if they're going to do a "So you think you can Deadlift?" series. Both are definitely good to watch. I've improved my bench and squat immensely by watching both of these.

Invariably when I see bench instruction videos I think of the arguments that crop up that bodybuilding bench press is different. Which, of course, I strongly disagree with.

Sure, they may not need to arch (as much) or use leg drive, but I don't like the idea of changing a compound lift so you can better isolate a single muscle group at the expense of good and proper form.

I never really understood the difference in Benching until I was schooled some time ago. Now its been five years training home alone and I when I make it out to the "real" world and see kids and what I would believe to be the inexperienced I can see why my shoulders hurt so much.

I have tried to bench like this recently, but while I set up nice, I think, on my upper back, back arched, feet flat, legs tense, feel strong, etc. I notice a couple reps in, my legs are relaxed and doing nothing. That dude in the video could push my knees and they'd collapse like wet noodles. My legs just seem to think benching is a day off apparently, and frankly my back arch disappears noticeably as well.

After watching this video, I tried going up on my toes, but all that happened was my butt just came right up off the bench. I couldn't keep it down until I relaxed my legs and I was back at square one.

Any ideas on how to progress towards the right form?

I must admit that leg placement has never been a concern of mine - and I have only a slight arch which crumbles as the set progresses.

Also, when I'm squeezing out those last couple of reps, form just goes out the window! I still use full ROM, but my legs could be flailing and the bar is wobbling as I slowly put it up...

I'm moving the mighty 100 kilos (220.5 lbs) for 11 reps now, unassisted, but it's pretty clear I'm going to have to get my form right if I expect to progress!

What is your upper back like? Is it tight? And what is your arm angle? Are they flared or more 45 degrees?

Concentrate on rowing the bar to your chest. That might help you keep that upper back tightness. It's hard to have a tight upper back and relaxed feet. At least for me.

A slight arch usually builds naturally from a tight back. Sit at a chair and tighten your lats. You can feel yourself arching a bit.

You also need to bring your feet back in a bit. Leg placement helps to keep your back planted, which is vital for proper ROM and set up.



Proper setup allows you to minimize shoulder wear and tear by keeping the ROM at a minimum. The bodybuilding-style bench maximizes ROM, places the shoulders at odd angles, and it horrible for shoulder longevity.
