It means you don't end up ripping the callouses off and exposing raw skin, when doing the lift.

I just do everything with an overhand grip. My grip strength out-performs my muscle strength so it's not an issue for me. I will admit that when I do deadlifts I just go over-under to get the most out of it.

I havent done barbell static holds, but i used to hang from a chin up bar with weight strapped to me and it improved my grip strength a lot and very quickly.

I work up to maximal weight with out straps then strap up when my form begins to suffer. My grip will fatigue way before the rest will.

Shave the callouses a must!

My grip surprisingly became an issue last year when I worked my way back up to reps w/ 345#. I hadn't been doing much heavy work for awhile.

It is no longer an issue, but I hope to get my DL up high enough soon for it to become an issue again.

My go too's....holds after my last DL rep. Heavy DB rows/shrugs/farmers walk without straps. Also, all my pull movements and hanging knee raises w/out straps.

The only other thing I do is occasionally when I feel I need more work is to use those cheap grippers while on the treadmill. I can work the crap out of them this way.

I would bet my hands are about the smallest here, but my grip is not usually a factor.

Absolutely I use static holds. I like doing them with the 2" axle better than a barbell though. I can deadlifted around 550 double overhand with no straps without my grip failing, so I like the axle better because it's harder.

Lately pro strongman Van Hatfield and I do this little grip contest at the end of our sessions, it's helped my grip a lot.
