tested my 1RM for Bench Press last night for the first time since switching to Power Lifting and training under madcow's. I was a little disappointed, because I missed 300 twice, midway up, but hit 275 pretty strongly. Overall it was a good learning experience and I'll be testing my deadlift and squat max this week as well. I may be able to hit something between 275 and 300, but I didn't try. I went from 225, 250, 275, 300. Maybe that was part of the problem?

bodyweight: 202.5

1rm bench 24 OCT 11: 250 lbs
1rm bench 24 JAN 12: 275 lbs

A 25 pound bump in 3 months at that level is very good progress. I was at 350 for 3 years without making progress.

I will also add that 5 pounds can make a world of difference. One weight can feel super easy, but add 5 pounds and it could feel like moving the Earth. 300 might have been a fail, nut 290 or 295 might have been a huge success.

You have make great progress. Nothing less.

thanks, that makes sense. next time i will probably work up 10 lbs each time now that i have a point of reference.

I have learned never to try an beat my previous 1RM by more than 5-10 pounds on the big lifts. That's how I roll. Others may like to do it differently, but they don't have a beard.

I also tend to add 2.5kg max (5.5 lbs) to the previous 1RM, sometimes lower, if I can access lighter weight plates; being female, that sort of falls into line with the above load additions...albeit on a smaller scale.

I didn't bring my log to work with me today, so I won't be able to post the sets/reps from my squat and deadlift tests.

I hit a huge milestone last night, 1000 lbs total!

Squat - 385 lbs. - This was the first time I've ever tested my 1RM for squats, and I couldn't believe the pressure created in my body. It felt like I could pop! 365 was tough, so I added 10 and 375 was a tougher, but I felt like I had a little more so 10 more lbs and 385 went up. It was a bit of a grinder, but I'm very confident I was well below parallel in the hole, so I am satisfied with the results. I was aiming for 405, but I can't complain.

Deadlift - 405 lbs. - Also the first time testing deadlift 1RM and they felt very strong. The heavier they got, the more light-headed I felt after the attempts. I tried 415, but at that point, it didn't budge lol.


Squat - 385 lbs
Bench - 275 lbs
Deadlift - 405 lbs

Total - 1065 lbs!

Bodyweight - 201 lbs

I may attempt 285 and 295 on bench friday, I haven't decided yet. 1000 lbs was my goal for august, so now I'm officially working toward 400/300/500.
