Default 2016 Ironworks Open - Write Up

This is the 4th, and probably last time that I do this meet. This was an outdoor meet, and I almost pulled out of it, but figured I would give it a go since I had never done and outdoor meet before.

First, this was the longest meet I have ever been a part of. Registration started at 7:00 am, and lifting ended at 8:15 pm. There was pretty much nothing ready to go when we got there, so weigh-ins, equipment check and rack heights were not efficient at all. For the rack heights, they decided to do all the squat heights first, then to all the bench heights because they didn't want to keep moving the bench in and out. So that took forever. There was supposed to be a rules meeting at 8, but they didn't finish rack heights until about 8:30. Lifting was supposed to start at 9, but got underway at 9:20.

And the weather played a HUGE part in why it was such a shit show. They had a 40'x40' tent for spectators, and ez-ups for announcers and vendors. There was absolutely no shade whatsoever for the lifting platform or the lifters themselves. The temp hit high 80s and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky until almost 3, so people were roasting. The platform itself was a normal platform, which is fine for gyms floors, but they just plopped it on the grass. 3/4" plywood doesn't stand up too well with people squatting, benching and deadlifting on it. It was saggy as all hell, and not even. It had a noticeable tilt backwards.

Squat:
1st - 232.5 kg (512.6 lbs) - Good
2nd - 240 kg (529.1 lbs) - Good
3rd - Scratched

I was in the last flight of 4, and my flight didn't start squatting until shortly after noon. My first squat went well enough, but during my 2nd, I got very light headed. It took me a few seconds to get my head right after I racked it. I scratched my 3rd lift. It was probably just the heat, but I figured I would be in my best interest to just get some water and food and recover for bench. This was disappointing because I hit 540 pretty well in training, and was hoping to hit at least that at this meet.

Bench Press:
1st - 130 kg (286.6 lbs) - Good
2nd - 137.5 kg (303.1 lbs) - Good
3rd - 142.5 kg (314.2 lbs) - Miss

First two attempts went really well. Third one I just got in my own head and didn't get enough speed off the chest. Stalled right around lockout. Pretty much what I expected from this lift.

Deadlift:
1st - 250 kg (551.2 lbs) - Good
2nd - 272.5 kg (600.8 lbs) - Good
3rd - 282.5 kg (622.8 lbs) - Good

My flight didn't start deadlifts until about 7:30 pm. To be perfectly honest, I had very low expectations, lol. I was tired, hot and hungry. I hit my opener MUCH better than I thought I was going to. I hadn't pulled 600 since April, but I figured who cares, let's go for it. Much to my surprise, that flew up too. After some encouragement from a friend, I jumped to 622. A grinder for sure, but I got it. Beat my previous meet PR by 11 lbs. Go figure.

Overall:
In a weird turn of events, I started the day confident with my squat, content with my bench, and not expecting much from my dead. In any case, I totaled 1454 @ 270 lbs, so I ended the day with a deadlift PR and a total PR.

Damn Melvin, you are just one badass superb powerlifter.

Congratz on a great set of lifts on what has to be one of the most grueling meets any lifter could be subjected to. I now could never complain lol.

Thanks guys. Still pretty sore this morning. At least my poor bald head has subsided from lobster red into a more friendly shade of salmon pink, lol.

To give a quick illustration of how badly this was laid out:

The big white tent was for spectators.
To the right of the big white tent was the warm up area.
To the left of the big white tent was the lifting platform.
To the left and top of the lifting platform was where waiting lifters for the current flight had to wait.
All of the other tents/canopies were ones that people brought for themselves.

There was no shade at all for the active lifters.
