Default 0 to 1st Meet: My First 9 Months of Training

In case anyone is interested, I thought I would summarize the last 9 months or so from just starting out strength training, up to my first powerlifting meet. I started lifting just before my 43rd birthday at a height of 5'8" and 156 lbs in July of last year. Stumbled across StrongLifts 5x5 and did that program for a couple of months. Hurt my shoulder(cost me 4 months progress) and switched to Starting Strength, which I followed until Dec 1 2014. At this point I switched to intermediate programming via the Texas Method, which I am still following. Although I do not know what my true starting 1 rep maxes were, as I was honestly not even capable of a 1RM without hurting myself, I started out squatting 70 lbs(and it was not easy, having never worked legs before in my life), bench around 90 lbs, press 70, and deadlift 135, all for sets of 5.

I attended the 18th annual Battle of the Great Lakes in Copley OH, a USAPL sanctioned meet. This was quite a bit sooner than I had intended to do my first meet. However, the meet I wanted to attend as my first event happens to be a regional or national event of some sort, so I had to do another USAPL event to qualify.

I entered the M1(40-44) 93kg(205lb) class weighing in at around 87 kg(192 lbs) obviously way under the weight limit, but I made no attempt to cut weight for the 83 kg class, although I likely easily could have done so. I am happy with how the event went. I made all 9 of my lifts, getting a single red light only on my third attempt bench press. And all of my thirds lifts were right at the limits of my strength, so nothing left on the table:

Squat 360/370/380 5 lb PR
Bench 229/242/248 13 lb PR
Dead 409/429/441 16 lb PR
Total 1069 if I did all the Kg-lb conversion accurately

Although I was maybe 10% discouraged seeing lighter lifters squat over 500 lbs and deadlift over 600, I realize that strength is not something that can happen overnight. I am sure those lifters have worked hard for quite a few years to reach that level. So I am 90% motivated by seeing the type of results some of the stronger lifters achieved.

I am more motivated than ever to push to the next level. My next meet will be in Scranton PA on October 17th(?) . My goal for this event will be to hit 1200 lbs. I think this will be a challenging total to achieve, but will push me to do my best for the next 6 months.

Beyond that, I definitely intend to deadlift 600 lbs someday. This year I intend to get my deadlift past 500 lbs, my squat to 450, and my benchpress over 300.

Amazing progress for 9 months. It took balls to enter a meet 9 months into training. It will make your training that much better. Congrats man!

Thanks, and yes it felt weird to do a meet so soon, especially feeling that I am really not all that strong yet. But it was fun regardless and now I feel that I will be better prepared for the October meet.

I normally deadlift barefooted and realized I had nothing to deadlift in. So of course I deadlifted in my raised heal squat shoes which was not ideal. Next go I will have wrestling shoes or deadlift slippers.

It's hard not to, but try not to measure your strength next to more experienced guys/elite lifters ... you're strong. period. and have made incredible progress. Your hard work paid off. Think what another nine months will bring

Keep killing it!
