Default Amazing overhead strength vs some bloke flexing his traps

Here's a clip of Mark Clegg. The sugdenbarbell site lists his weight at 100kg (221lbs). If he's more than that, it's not by much - he competes in strongman in the under-105kgs (230lbs).

He's aiming to get 240kg (529lb) overhead. Here he puts up 222kg (492lb) in a behind the neck jerk:

Now that's phenomenal explosive strength. Gobsmacking. Amazing. Something very few people on the planet can do. So given the billions of views youtube gets, and the millions of people in gyms, how many views has this incredibly inspirational bit of lifting had?

As I write this, it's just 310.

Now for contrast, here is "Elginintensity". He seems to do nothing but criticise other people. But - at least to my way of thinking- he doesn't do it in an interesting way. His comments aren't witty, or insightful, or cleverly put. He does a bit of swearing then lifts his traps up - which aren't even particularly well-developed.

Nevertheless, this weary schtick has garnered him thousands of views. This video -him saying where his new channel is moving - is currently over 190,000 views:

The take home message seems to be that in the internet age, years of dedication and god-given talent is no match for a big mouth, attitude-for-hire and not very impressive traps.

Yes, there seems to be far too many fitness channels like this on YouTube.

An outlet for their ego being the primary use for the channel rather than providing any motivation or to actually help people.

The way some channels have millions of views, and other, far more credible and helpful ones have next to nothing has always annoyed me.

But those people fade away in time, and the longevity of an experienced, quieter person starts to become appreciated more.

That was alot faster than I pictured.

Seems like people want to watch drama rather than appreciate something real.

Youtube is really a lot like TV. Given that "the people" have long craved entertainment, much of the time over information (say), well... yeah.

I guess that if this is a bad thing, then it strikes me as an indictment of human nature in general, rather than of "the internet age", for instance. The power of marketing comes to mind, and that relies significantly on some (IMO) less than admirable traits in humanity.

Regardless, Elgin is about humour, not ego. In my opinion, that is. To each his or her own though, as always - it certainly is a niche brand of humour.

Every time I see something from this Elgin guy I can't help but think about a quote from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg:

“The highest level than can be reached by a mediocre but experienced mind is a talent for uncovering the weaknesses of those greater than itself.”

That sums it up completely.

Scream loud, dance like a monkey, cash paychecks.

I don't think anything has changed really. Back in school, like 40+ years ago, it seemed the most popular kids were the jerks with nothing meaningful to say or do and/or good looking or jocks. The real inspirational kids making a difference were ignored or poked fun of or bullied.

welcome to the internet.

also this is what elgin wants. he wants you to get mad and talk about him and share his videos. he doesnt care what you think. he wants views and subs and thats what he gets by doing what he does. personally i find some of his videos entertaining and some not so much.

Also seems like this is what most sponsors want as well. Bust your ass and be humble? No thanks. We like the dancing monkey who yells and screams and head butts the bar
