Default Wacky things people have told you in the gym...

An experience I had a few hours ago at the gym inspired me to make this thread...I asked someone for a spot on the bench press and after they didn't let go of the bar the whole set they went on saying how Everyone should only bench in a smith machine and free weight bench press is bad because it's not locked in straight up and down..also said that you shouldn't grip the bar like your punching the ceiling but rather bend your wrist back so the bottom of your palm faces the ceiling. It was such a bizarre moment for me..after he said that he just walked away and told the gym owner the gym needs a smith machine...this guy seemed obsessed with the smith machine

I got told that I shouldnt deadlift 315 if I didnt want back problems. Then I kept warming up.

I've seen arms snap because lifters bent their wrists back putting the weight behind their wrist. I guess that puss will never know that since he will never lift enough to know.

With work if my hands get sore, I really need wraps while benching to keep my wrists straight.

I was in the whirlpool after a dead workout and a sweet old Russian couple (early 60s) that immigrated about ten years ago asked me how I got so strong. I went on, ego as much in check as it could, to explain powerlifting.
Then the husband - who spoke very rough english - asked the wife a question. She interpreted and asked "With all that muscle, why so fat?"

I laughed so hard I almost drowned in a 3 ft hot tub!

Yeah, got told not to squat so deep (I was going just a few inches below parallel, aka PL legal). Didn't know what to say, so didn't say much at all.

Was also told that full body was "suboptimal" or words to that effect. Well, even though *I* have a long way to go, fwiw, my lifts have long since surpassed theirs. Along with my "gainz" in general, it seems. But whatever...

Then there was the "hardcore" guy in UFC apparel, regurgitating all kinds of muscle mag bizarreness. I really didn't know what to say to him. His "claim to fame" appears to be a mediocre weighted set of situps done on occasion. Other than that, I can't tell if he ever deviates from light weight benching (yeah, this coming from me, lol), light weight curling, and maybe a machine or two...

It's a funny little gym. Small-ish town, small-ish lifters, ha.
